Search Engine Placement Ranking

Search Engine Optimization- the best way to increase traffic on your web site

Search Engine Optimisation or SEO could be described as a process to improve the volume and quality of traffic to a web site from search engines from search results that is natural, organic or algorithimic. When a web site is placed earlier in the search results or as it is generally said as ' ranked higher in search result', more people searching the Internet would be visiting the site. This technique of SEO is also used for targeting different kinds of search that would include image search, local search or industry specific vertical search engines.

As a part of developing internet marketing strategy, Search Engine Optimisation keeps into consideration the way search engines work and what topics are popular for web search. Optimization of a web site would be primarily involved with editing the contents of the web site and its HTML coding aiming at increasing its relevance towards some specific keywords and to remove obstructions to the indexing activities of search engine.

To understand Search Engine Optimization, let us first take a look into the way search engines work.

There are two different types of search engines available for use. One is crawler-based search engine while the other uses human-powered directories. These two different types of search engines work entirely in two different ways.

In case of crawler-based search engines like Google, they create their listings of the web sites automatically. To do this, these search engines use 'spider' or 'crawl' the web. When we search the net using these search engines, we actually search through this list already generated by the search engine.

In case of a human-powered directory, humans create the listing used for searching the net. Open Directory is an example of one such directory. When you create a web site, you submit a short description of this site to the directory, or editors write one for the sites they review.

A search using human-powered directory would match it only with the descriptions submitted to this directory. In this case, any change is made on the website, it would make no difference in the listing of the site. Therefore, the efforts to improve the listing in crawler-based search engine would not have any effect in improving its ranking while using human-powered directory for web search.

Some newer search engines have now developed that uses both of these techniques and might be called hybrid search engine. MSN Search is one such search engine. But, a hybrid search engine would favour one type listing over another. In case of MSN Search, it favours human-powered listings from LookSmart.

All these information would help you to derive maximum benefit from the process of Search Engine Optimisation for increasing traffic towards your web site
